Right To Buy & Right To Acquire
If you’re renting from the council or a housing association, you may be eligible for a discount to help you buy the property you’re living in. Call us on 01925 351 350 to find out how we can help you with a purchase under the Right to Buy or Right to Acquire schemes.
What is the Right to Buy Scheme?
The Right to Buy scheme allows council tenants to purchase the homes they live in at a discount.
You’re eligible for the scheme if:
- The property is your main or only home
- It’s self-contained
- You’re a secure tenant
- You have rented from a public landlord for three years
You can also apply jointly with someone who shares your tenancy or up to three family members who have lived with you for the last 12 months.
The discount available will vary depending on several factors, such as how long you’ve lived at the property and the type of property.
The maximum discounts available are currently £87,200 across England and £116,200 in London.
Check the Own Your Home site to see if you’re eligible, and to get an offer if you are.
If you’ve had an offer, call us on 01925 351 350 to find out how we can help you purchase your home with the Right to Buy scheme.
What is the Right to Acquire Scheme?
The Right to Acquire scheme may also allow you to buy your home at a discount, but it is slightly different to Right to Buy.
In short, Right to Buy allows council tenants to buy their home, whereas Right to Acquire allows housing association tenants to buy their home.
You’re eligible for the Right to Acquire scheme if you’ve had a public sector landlord for three years, and if your property:
- Is your main or only home
- Is a self-contained property
- Was built or bought by, or transferred to, a housing association after 31 March 1997
The discount you can get under Right to Acquire could be between £9,000 and £16,000, depending on where you live in the UK.
Again, you can also apply jointly in the same way you could apply jointly for Right to Buy, and we can help you with this.
