Sometimes customers are dissatisfied with your service, and whether this is justified or not they might try to deter other customers from using your product or service.

Your customers might decide to post false, fake, or otherwise harmful reviews about your business online. While they are entitled to publicly post a review, you don’t have to let them defame or unjustly criticise your business online.

You may be able to request that the review, or other content, be removed for breaching the policies of the website the content was posted on. If the website operator doesn’t remove the content, you may still be able to have the content removed under the Defamation Act.

Removing Negative Reviews on Google

One of the biggest platforms for people to review businesses is Google. These are the reviews shown to the side of search results or under a business’ profile on Google Maps.

Unfortunately, not every customer will leave a positive review. Most people expect a few unhappy customers from time to time, and this usually isn’t a problem.

There is a problem, however, if a particularly angry or vengeful customers have fake reviews posted, or make false or defamatory comments that are harmful to your business.

Google has published a set of policies on prohibited and restricted content. So, if your business has had a review that:

  • Is clearly spam or fake
  • Is not relevant to the poster’s experience of your business
  • Contains explicit or illegal content
  • Is dangerous, derogatory, or defamatory
  • Breaches any other Google policy

Then you may be able to remove the review. The simplest and most immediate solution is to flag the review for moderation.

However, flagging a negative review does not always result in the review being taken down. So, if this doesn’t work, please get in touch. We can help you submit a formal takedown request and, if necessary, serve legal notice to Google to remove the content.

Removing Negative Review on Other Platforms

While Google is one of the most popular choices for leaving reviews, you may have customers who leave reviews in other platforms, such as Trustpilot, Facebook, or Amazon. If this is the case, you can follow a similar process as you would for Google reviews.

The important thing is to make sure you understand the policies of the website the review is posted on.
